ODE TO ONION

The foundation of the proposition is a list of salvageable materials, each with a specific purpose. The materials include but are not limited to onion skins, avocado skins, citrus peels, eggshells and coffee grinds. They will no longer be viewed as waste materials that belong in landfill but irreplaceable commodities and key components in the production process. The establishment of this proposition involves targeting businesses with pre-existing interests in sustainable practices. The network will bind together those in the food and fashion industry. This involves a carefully designed system whereby the food waste will be collected and re-distributed from local cafes to regional artists, designers and manufacturers. These practitioners will then be able to use the materials as a means for education into past, traditional techniques; unconventional, contemporary practices; or unexplored, future potential. Makers, creators and consumers alike will work together towards a more sustainable system of production and consumption.

It aims to revalue waste, revive community relationships and reinvent consumer behaviours. It utilises the bi-products of food production as a means of devising alternative techniques for clothing production. It creates a network of active participants in order to foster relationships between local businesses and encourage opportunities for co-operation and collaboration.
